Booted Bantam Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Booted Bantam Mug by Madeleine Floyd depicts the striking chicken with his “boots” of abundant feathers on the feet and shanks.

As well as his distinctive boots, the Booted Bantam is also recognisable by the long stiff feathers pointing down from the backs of the thighs and almost reaching the ground – known as vulture hocks!

On the reverse side of the mug is the single, pale tinted egg of the Booted Bantam (though they’re kept mainly for showing, this breed does lay around 120 eggs a year).

The Booted Bantam Mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.

Japanese Bantam Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Japanese Bantam Mug by Madeleine Floyd depicts the striking chicken with his tail reaching well above his head.

It is thought that Japanese Bantams first arrived in Japan from China in the early 1600s when they started to appear in Japanese paintings, and that they reached the UK in the 1860s.  The first Japanese Bantam Club was formed at the Crystal Palace (London) show on 12th November 1912.

On the reverse side of the mug is a single, cream-coloured egg making this a perfect mug for your morning or breakfast cuppa!

Welsummer Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Welsummer Mug by Madeleine Floyd depicts the most well established of domestic poultry with its distinctive, almost vertical dark tail feathers, and red wattles and comb!

Welsummers are a Dutch breed of chicken and were introduced to the UK in the early twentieth century.  According to breeders they have a friendly and intelligent temperament, and they lay around 160 eggs a year, which is no doubt why they are something of a national favourite.  On the reverse side of the mug is a single, dark brown egg making this a perfect mug for your morning or breakfast cuppa!

The Welsummer Mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.

Barn Owl Mug Left by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Barn Owl Mug Left by Madeleine Floyd depicts the owl in exquisite water colour, looking towards the left!

A silent and stealthy hunter the Barn Owl is equipped with super sensitive hearing; the left ear picks up sounds from below, the right from those above, allowing it to locate its prey with great accuracy.  Known as the Ghost Owl because of its moonlight-reflecting white wings and feathers that allow completely silent flight, the Barn Owl likes to take a vole or two by stealth.

On the reverse of the mug is a delicate watercolour painting of the owl’s egg.

The Barn Owl Mug Left by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.  And for perfect owl-awareness why not pair it with an Owls Apron by the same designer?

Christmas Robins Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Christmas Robins Mug by Madeleine Floyd features this cheerful songbird in several exquisite water colour drawings, along with festive holly and mistletoe, and a tiny sprig of those seasonal white berries inside the lip of the mug.

The robin is one of the UK’s most well-loved garden birds and is considered by some to be our national bird.  Whilst most survive barely more than a year, the oldest robin clocked up 19 years!  The last to bed and the first to rise, the robin is a year round companion to gardeners and tolerates humans more readily than most garden birds.

This little bird’s song is as distinctive as his colours, and is at its strongest in winter in order to defend territory and attract the attentions of a mate.

The Christmas Robins mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for Christmas (obvs!), birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.

Capacity 300ml • Hand washing recommended • High quality china • Dimensions: height 8cm x width 7cm

Long Eared Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Long Eared Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd depicts the owl in exquisite water colour.

Named for the feather tufts which resemble mammalian ears, the Long Eared Owl is a UK native.  It raises its “ear” tufts when alarmed, which in turn may alarm any creature which spies it!  With beautiful orange eyes and dark brown feathers, the bird is excellently camouflaged particularly when in woodland, and is therefore harder to spot than other resident species of owls.

On the reverse of the mug is a delicate line drawing of a baby Long Eared Owlet in flight (or free fall!), and inside the rim a tiny feather.

The Long Eared Owl mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.  And for perfect owl-awareness why not pair it with an Owls Apron by the same designer?

Tawny Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Tawny Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd depicts the owl in exquisite water colour.

The owl’s dark eyes indicate that he hunts by night.  A bit of an omnivore, the Tawny Owl will eat a range of small mammals and rodents as well as small birds, frogs, fish, insects and worms.  Their familiar call – Twit Twoo – is actually the combined conversation of a male and a female.  If you hear a truncated call, it may well be a youngster, establishing his own territory for the first time!

Although there are an estimated 50,000 pairs of Tawny Owls in the UK, they are now on the Amber list due to concerns about long term decline.

On the reverse of the mug is a delicate line drawing of the Tawny Owl in flight, and inside the rim a tiny feather.

Short Eared Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Short Eared Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd depicts the owl in exquisite water colour.

The owl’s yellow eyes indicate that, unusually, he is a daytime hunter.  Easiest to spot during winter, he’s a similar size to the more ubiquitous Tawny Owl, but with longer wings, and can be found on moorland and salt marshes.  Resident numbers are boosted by migrants arriving to over-winter, from Iceland, Russia and Scandinavia.  Short Eared Owl numbers have declined so dramatically that they are now on the Amber conservation list – there are only an estimated 2,000 pairs now in the UK.

On the reverse of the mug is a delicate line drawing of the owl going in for the kill, and inside the rim a tiny feather.

Little Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Little Owl Mug by Madeleine Floyd shows the smallest of the UK owls in exquisite water colour.

Not actually a native to the UK, the Little Owl was introduced in the 19th century.  It nests in tree cavities and though it hunts by night, can often be seen in the daytime, perched up high and basking in sunshine!  When it does hunt, it will do so from a perch rather than on the wing, and its most recognisable trait is the bobbing which occurs before it pounces on prey.  Sadly Little Owl numbers have declined dramatically and there are only an estimated 6,000 pairs now in the UK.

On the reverse of the mug is a delicate line drawing of three Little Owl chicks, or owlets, and inside the rim a tiny feather.

The Little Owl mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.  And for perfect owl-awareness why not pair it with an Owls Apron by the same designer?

Starling Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Starling Mug by Madeleine Floyd features this regular garden visitor in an exquisite water colour drawing.

We feel that the starling is somewhat misunderstood!  When she’s not murmurating around with her mates, the starling can often be found in UK gardens, showing off her glossy green and purple-black feathers.  Though famed for their incredible murmurations of flocks sometimes numbering tens of thousands, Starling numbers have been greatly declining over the past few decades and they are currently on the Red list.

There’s bird song captured in lettering around the base of the mug – a gregarious tcheer…ful call – and if egg-spotting’s your thing, there’s an illustration of a delicately coloured egg – pale blue – on the other side of the mug!

The Starling mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.

Butterflies Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Butterflies Mug by Madeleine Floyd features five of our most beautiful butterflies in an exquisite water colour drawing.

The Peacock, Fritillary, Painted Lady, Common Blue and Clouded Yellow Butterflies are delicately reproduced around the mug along with the kinds of flowers that they are usually found near.  All can be regularly spotted though some of them have spectacular habits!  The Clouded Yellow is famous for occasional mass immigrations (and subsequent breeding), these being known as ”Clouded Yellow Years”, the most recent of which was in 2006. There are eight UK resident species of Fritillary butterfly, though these are harder to spot as they are in decline due to loss of habitat.

The Butterflies mug by Madeleine Floyd makes an ideal gift for birthdays, house-warming and other occasions.

Five Blackbird Mug by Madeleine Floyd

£12.95

The Five Blackbird Mug by Madeleine Floyd features one of our favourite garden birds in an exquisite water colour drawing.  One of the delicate drawings is of the fledgling bird, and there’s even a tiny tree blossom painted on the inner rim of the mug.

The Blackbird is found throughout Britain and is particularly to be seen in parks and gardens.  You may hear it from January onwards often after rain (of which we have a lot!).   It is also a home loving bird – most do not move far from where they hatched, in order to make a nest and have their own family.
