With their smart iridescent plumage, distinctive round-winged shape in flight and haunting wail, lapwings can often be spotted during winter on ploughed fields. A group of lapwings is called a ‘deceit’ – named after the way the parent birds lure predators away from their nests by feigning a broken wing! The lapwing’s signature call is “peewit”.

The Great Tit is, as its name suggests, larger than other tits. In smart plumage with a distinctive black stripe down the front making it appear “waistcoated”, the Great Tit also has an amazing vocal repertoire. Its basic tune, which sounds like “tea-cher, tea-cher tea-cher” on a loop, is only the start. The male bird has four different songs which it can produce at three different tempos!
Designed by the highly skilled artist Stephen Lennon, the Great Tit greetings card is part of his Songbirds & Seedheads range. Stephen’s designs start as a drawing, often from life, inspired and informed by his considerable botanical knowledge honed as a nurseryman. His cards are printed locally (he’s a Yorkshireman in exile, now to be found in Northumberland) and the production of them supports many small businesses.
